What Are Scleral Lenses?

Book Appointment

In the world of eye care, innovation constantly changes how we approach vision correction. One such advancement is the development of scleral contact lenses, which offer a unique solution for individuals with specific vision and eye health needs

They are a type of rigid gas-permeable lens that is larger than a traditional contact lens. These lenses have gained popularity due to their ability to address complex vision issues, while providing comfort and clarity that many traditional lenses cannot match.

In this blog, we’ll explore what scleral contact lenses are, their types, benefits, and who can benefit from them.

What Are Scleral Contact Lenses?

Scleral contact lenses are a type of rigid gas-permeable lens significantly larger than traditional contact lenses. While regular lenses typically have a diameter of about 9 to 9.5 mm, scleral lenses can range from 14.5 mm to as much as 24 mm in diameter. This larger size allows them to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the white part of the eye (sclera). The space between the cornea and the inside of the lens acts as a reservoir for saline solution, which helps maintain hydration and provides a smooth optical surface to correct vision.

Types of Scleral Contact Lenses

There are three primary types of scleral lenses, each designed to cater to different needs:

  1. Corneo-Scleral Lenses: These lenses bridge the gap between traditional gas-permeable lenses and full scleral lenses, with diameters ranging from 13 to 15 mm. They provide a larger optical surface than standard lenses, making them suitable for individuals with mild corneal irregularities.
  2. Mini-Scleral Lenses: With a diameter of about 18 mm, mini-scleral lenses cover the entire corneal surface and extend onto the sclera. They are ideal for those with moderate corneal irregularities or dry eyes.
  3. Full Scleral Lenses: The largest of the three, full scleral lenses can have diameters up to 24 mm. They offer maximum coverage and are perfect for those with severe corneal irregularities or conditions, such as keratoconus.

Who Should Wear Scleral Lenses?

Scleral lenses are particularly beneficial for individuals with “hard-to-fit” eyes or corneal abnormalities, such as keratoconus, post-surgical corneas, or severe dry eye. The lens acts as a new, smooth optical surface, allowing light to pass through to the retina without distortion. This feature provides excellent visual acuity and comfort.

Furthermore, because of their large diameter and stable fit, scleral lenses are less likely to dislodge from the eye compared to conventional contact lenses. This stability makes them an excellent choice for active individuals or those who have experienced discomfort with other lenses.

Benefits of Scleral Contact Lenses

  • Enhanced comfort: The fluid reservoir in scleral lenses not only hydrates the eye continuously, but also acts as a cushiony barrier. This design reduces irritation from blinking and environmental factors, significantly increasing wearing comfort throughout the day, especially for individuals with dry eyes or sensitive corneas.
  • Improved vision: Scleral lenses create a smooth, uniform surface over the cornea, which helps correct vision abnormalities. This design ensures crisp, clear vision even for those with significant corneal irregularities, such as keratoconus, providing them with an enhanced visual experience they might not achieve with regular contact lenses.
  • Greater stability: Due to their large size and stable fit, scleral lenses minimize the risk of lens movement or dislodgement. This stability ensures consistent vision correction from morning to night, making them an ideal choice for active individuals or those concerned about their lenses shifting during daily activities.
  • Protection from environmental factors: By covering more of the eye’s surface, scleral lenses offer additional protection against environmental factors such as dust, wind, and allergens. This extended coverage is beneficial for people who spend a lot of time outdoors or in environments where their eyes are exposed to irritants.
