4 Effective Ways to Keep Fall Eye Allergies at Bay

Fall is a wonderful season for spending time outdoors. Unfortunately, fall also brings a plethora of allergens. Plant debris from falling leaves can enter your eyes, causing a hypersensitivity reflex from your immune system. Your eyes may become red, itchy, and watery. In today’s post, Park Slope Eye, your reliable family eye care clinic, shares four ways to minimize the unpleasantness of fall allergies.

1. Limit the Time You Spend Outdoors

An effective way to prevent eye allergy attacks is to avoid your trigger allergens. Ragweed is a major culprit during fall. Since its pollen count is usually high in the morning, try to limit your time outdoors in the morning.

2. Wear Protective Gear

If staying indoors isn’t an option, you can try wearing a face mask when going outside. Your trusted eye doctor also suggests wearing safety goggles or glasses. The lenses can prevent pollens, debris, and other impurities from coming into contact with your eyes, reducing your risk of eye allergies.

3. Observe Proper Hygiene

Another reliable way to keep fall eye allergies at bay is to observe cleanliness. Wash your hands frequently to reduces hand-eye transmission of potential allergens. We also recommend changing your sheets on a regular basis. Keep the windows closed and use an air filter and humidifier in your home as well.

4. Visit Your Eye Care Specialist

The best way to maintain your eye health no matter the season is to visit your eye care specialist regularly. After assessing your eyes, we may prescribe antihistamines to help with your allergies. We may also recommend applying anti-inflammatory eye drops.
