5 UV Safety Tips for Your Eyes Hero

5 UV Safety Tips for Your Eyes

Book Appointment

Summer is one of the best times relax with your family. You may be looking forward to bonding over barbecues as well as enjoying outdoor sports and other recreational activities. Keep in mind, however, that the sun may be harsher during this time of the year, making you more likely to acquire UV-induced vision problems. Let your trusted eye care clinic, Park Slope Eye, share five eye protective tips as we celebrate UV Safety Month this July.

1. Be Aware of the Impact of UV Exposure on Your Visual Health

UVA rays are commonly associated with retinal penetration, which may cause changes in your eyesight. Prolonged exposure to this type of UV light can also increase your risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygium. UVB rays, on the other hand, are major causes of corneal sunburn and conjunctival inflammation.

2. Verify the UV Index Before You Go Outside

The World Health Organization has established an internal UV standard scale, known as the UV index. It measures the UV strength in a specific place at a particular time. This is why your reliable eye specialist recommends checking the UV index in your area before heading outside for your protection.

3. Don’t Forget to Apply Sunscreen

Make sure to choose one that provides both UVA and UVB coverage. This way, you’re less likely to get sunburned. It’s also a good idea to bring along your umbrellas and wide-brimmed hats.

4. Always Use Sunglasses

A reliable way to prevent UV-related eye conditions is to wear high-quality sunglasses all the time. We have a large selection of sunglasses, which can absorb up to 400 nanometers of UVA and UVB radiation, giving you 100% protection. For your optimum eye care, we also suggest choosing an oversized pair with wraparound frames.

5. Don’t Forget to Have Your Summer Eye Exam

Most importantly, have your eyes checked by our expert optometrists. This allows us to look for signs of UV-related ocular changes so we can promptly render appropriate management. The earlier we correct them, the better chances we have of saving your eyesight.
