Are You Using Your Eye Makeup Correctly?

Makeup is not a modern invention; in fact, there is evidence that the ancient Egyptians wore makeup made from kohl and antimony. Today, makeup has developed into a multibillion-dollar industry with far more complex production methods. The substances used today have given modern cosmetics a wide spectrum of colors and styles, and safety measures have removed any harmful side effects they may have.

Are You Using Your Eye Makeup Correctly?

Unfortunately, you still take some risk when wearing makeup, especially when applied improperly. These risks include infection, irritation and allergic reactions. It’s important to be particularly careful when applying eye makeup due to the sensitivity of the eyes. In today’s post, our professional family eye care specialists share some handy tips on safe eye makeup application to help you avoid complications.

Storage

Store your eye makeup in a clean place. Eyeliner pencils can dry up and become more difficult to apply. Don’t apply too much pressure when using stiff pencils, as this can irritate the skin around your eyes. Replace dried up eyeliner pencils regularly.

Observe the Three-Month Rule

Your eye doctor recommends following the three-month rule for your eye makeup. Don’t keep any product for longer than three months, regardless of the expiration date. It may sound impractical and expensive, but the potential harm is serious.

Don’t Share!

Do not share your eye makeup with anyone else. When you’re shopping in a store, ask for samples that have not been used by other people before you. Changing applicators is not always enough as bacteria can sometimes be on the product itself.

Limit Eye Makeup to Your Eyes

Do not use eye makeup on any other part of your face or body and vice versa. Sometimes, your eyeliner shade may look perfect as a lip tint, but using it on your lips or any other part of your face can transfer bacteria to your eyes.

Clean Up Before Bedtime

Remove eye makeup every night before you go to bed. Use a soft damp cloth to wipe away eyeliner and brush away mascara with a clean cotton swab.
