Handy Winter Eye Care Tips

Book Appointment

Winter is just around the corner. As the temperatures continue to drop and the winds become dryer, you may be at risk of developing dry eyes and other eye conditions. In today’s post, your reliable eye care clinic, Park Slope Eye, shares some helpful tips to maintain your visual health and comfort this winter.

Handy Winter Eye Care Tips

Stay Hydrated

Dry eyes is a common problem in the winter. The lower temperatures often makes the air drier, which can cause your tears to evaporate faster than usual. We advise staying hydrated to prevent this condition. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your eyes moisturized this winter.

Use a Humidifier

Indoor heating systems are a necessity during winter because they keep you warm and cozy. However, they tend to dry out your living space, increasing your risk of developing dry eyes. Your trusted eye specialist advises running a humidifier to keep your home from getting too dry.

Keep Your Eyes Lubricated

Another effective tip to keep your eyes lubricated during winter is to apply artificial tears. Just like natural tears, they contain water, oil and mucus to help maintain your visual comfort. Eating foods rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids can also help prevent dry eyes. Some good sources are tuna, mackerel, and other cold-water fish.

Wear UV-Protective Sunglasses

A common misconception many still believe is that sunglasses with anti-ultraviolet (UV) coatings should only be used during summer. On the contrary, UV rays can be just as damaging in the winter. UV rays can reflect off of the snow and into your eyes, putting you at a greater risk of having UV-related vision problems. This is why wearing UV-protective sunglasses should also be included in your eye care regimen, no matter the season.

Most importantly, do not forget to visit your optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam. Fill out our contact form to schedule an appointment and learn more reliable winter eye care tips. We serve families in Brooklyn and nearby New York areas.
