4 Tips on Preventing Eye Injuries When Playing Sports

Book Appointment

Participating in sports and other recreational activities helps you stay fit. If proper protective measures are overlooked, however, you can put yourself at risk. In fact, studies have revealed that a huge proportion of eye injuries are sports-related.

Park Slope Eye, your dependable eye care clinic, shares four tips on protecting your eyes while playing sports as we observe Sports Eye Safety Month this April.

1. Use the Right Kind of Safety Eyewear

Research shows that up to 90% of the reported cases of sports-induced eye trauma could have been prevented through the use of appropriate protective eye gear. When looking for protective eyewear, start by checking the guidelines laid down by your sport’s governing body or the American Society for Testing and Materials. Eyewear made of polycarbonate is generally a good choice, as this material is extremely durable and has high impact resistance. Polycarbonate lenses can withstand extreme pressure, making them a good choice for contact sports.

2. Report Cases of Eye Trauma Immediately

If you sustain trauma to your eyes, seek help from your eye specialist as soon as possible. We have the skills, knowledge and instruments to detect hidden signs of eye injuries. Delaying medical assessment and treatment may worsen your condition. It may even lead to permanent vision loss if left unmanaged.

3. Avoid Self-Medication

Never treat an eye injury yourself. Do not apply pressure to, rub or even touch your affected eye. If an object is stuck in your eye, trust your eye doctor to take care of it. Avoid applying ointments or any other medications, as these may worsen the injury.

4. Have Regular Eye Exams

Whether you’re participating in a sports tournament or just enjoying some leisure activities, one of the best ways to protect your eyes is to see your eye care specialist regularly. We will perform an eye exam to evaluate your visual health.
